this one is long … but it blew my mind 🤯 so just bear with it!!
#tdil that eagles have insane eye sight 👀🦅.
intrigued? wondering just how good? well, they can see about four or five times further than you can … to put that into context: if you had eagle eyes you’d be able to see an ant from the roof of a 10-storey building or read the small print of a newspaper from a 1/4 of a mile away 😶. i’m sorry but that’s ruddy ridiculous!
they also have superior vision when it comes to colour. when they see the world, eagles see more vivid colours, perceive more shades and can even see ultraviolet light!
unlike those rather mundane uses for mad eyesight that i mentioned earlier, eagles actually use their incredible eyes to hunt #withgreatpowercomesgreatresponsibilty. with the eyes of an eagle, you’d be able to track down prey with your superior colour vision (the ultraviolet light ability would allow you to see small animal urine that reflects UV) and you’d be able to see rabbits from a mental distance.
another interesting fact about the way that eagles hunt is how they use their 340-degree field of view (us humans only have a 180-degree field of view) … eagles can pretty much see all the way around their head – it must be like constantly seeing a panoramic photo 🤔
anyway, when searching for prey, they turn their head sideways and sweep their telephoto lens across the field of view. once they’ve found a nice tasty rabbit, they turn their head directly towards it and focus both eyes on it, this allows them to judge the distance … by using both of these methods of seeing the prey, eagles can figure out the exact speed and approach that is required to get a tasty meal #likeasniper 🐰🦅
like me, you may now find yourself wondering how we actually know any of this stuff? like, without looking through an eagle’s eyes, how do we know just how far they can see … we can’t exactly ask them.
well, as conventional eye test methods of “better or worse, better … or worse” just won’t work with an animal, scientists have created super special eye tests for eagles.
one such test sees scientists set up a long tunnel with two televisions at the end – one of the tvs has a striped pattern on it. the eagle is tasked to fly down the tunnel to the striped screen to get a treat.
in order to figure out just how the eagle can see and perceive stuff, the scientists vary the width of the stripes etc and then do clever science stuff to figure out the details.
