ever eaten a foamy banana sweet and thought it tastes nothing like actual banana? 🍌 well, here’s your reason πŸ˜‰

#tdil artificial banana flavouring is based on a now extinct version of everyone’s favourite bendy fruit 😒

so, apparently, when you enjoy a sweet that’s flavoured like banana, it isn’t based on the same banana that you’ll find on the fruit aisle of your local supermarket. instead, it’s based on a banana called the ‘gros michel’ 😱

the story goes that the gros michel used to be the favoured banana for export … but it was wiped out by panama disease in the 1960s 😒. panama disease in a fungus that had been causing issues for banana growers since the 1800s.

by the 1960s, the disease had really taken its toll and the gros michel was pretty much extinct πŸ˜• that’s when people discovered that the less popular variant – the cavendish – was actually immune to that pesky panama disease πŸ™ŒπŸ»

for that reason, peeps started growing cavendish bananas instead of gros michel … which actually makes perfect sense πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ to this day, banana growers tend to grow cavendish bananas … they’re most likely the ones that you enjoy at home πŸ‘πŸ»

it isn’t all good news though πŸ™ˆ you see, through years of cultivating manipulation, farmers eventually ended up growing a banana that has no seeds and can only reproduce through transplants πŸ™„ not particularly an issue until …

… a new strain of panama disease came to life and started affecting cavendish bananas! πŸ™ˆ other big problem is that, because all cavendish bananas are effectively clones, they’re all the same and don’t have any variation in their makings πŸ™ƒ

that means that there’s zero chance of any cavendish banana being immune to the new strain and subsequently reproducing to create more immune bananas πŸ˜… (you know, survival of the fittest swag 😎)

pretty bleak, ay? πŸ™ˆ hopefully it’s not the end of our faithful bendy fruit … luckily, scientists are pretty clever when it comes to genetics and engineering and stuff πŸ‘πŸ» so they’ll possibly be able to save the humble banananananan 🍌

laters πŸ˜‰ #tdil
