today i learned – fri 26th oct 2018

it’s nearly bonfire night (i think πŸ™ˆ)! so here’s a little bonfire night type fact πŸ‘πŸ»

#tdil guy fawkes is the reason that the word ‘guy’ was created! 😳

so yeah, that bloke that tried (and failed) to blow up parliament is the reason why we use the word ‘guy’ to refer to men (or just general groups of peeps these days!)

you see, after his arrest and torture and death ☠️, the word guy started to be used as a way to call someone a ‘bad man’ … like, if you called a bloke a guy, you were saying that they were a bad person.

later, it also began to refer to a man that was weirdly dressed … i have literally no idea why πŸ™ˆ maybe guy fawkes had no fashion sense?? πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

anyway, it wasn’t until the americans got hold of the word that it started to lose its evil connotations 😏. it’s probably because they had no context, but the word ended up just turning into a way of referring to a group of people πŸ‘πŸ»

from terror plot to everyday word, that’s how it happened 😎 at least guy fawkes did one thing for us πŸ™ŒπŸ» #cheersdude

peace πŸ‘πŸ» #tdil
