today i learned – weds 6th june 2018

after a very brief break from food facts … we’re straight back into them peeps πŸ™ˆ this time, i think i might have actually unveiled a conspiracy! 😱

#tdil that the uncle ben logo (you know, the old looking dude) doesn’t actually reflect the real life creator of the brand!

i know right 🀯 #mindblown! that kind looking old fella (named frank and not ben) is actually just a guy that worked in hotel and isn’t someone’s epic rice making uncle.

wondering how this all happened? well, it’s all to do with that magical thing called marketing πŸ™„

you see, originally, uncle ben’s wasn’t even called that … instead, it was called ‘converted rice inc’ and was owned by a dude named gordon l. harwell.

after supplying rice to the allies during ww2, gordon decided that he wanted to start selling his pre-cooked rice to the masses … but thought that he needed a much nicer image than the one that a company called ‘converted rice inc’ conjours up in ya brainbox (lets face it, he had a point! πŸ˜…)

anyway, frank brown (the dude from the logo) happened to work at a restaurant that gordon and his business partner frequented quite often … apparently, frank and the rice dudes were chums!

after coming up with his idea to approach the masses, the rice selling pair decided that frank’s face was perfect as a trustworthy image for the brand.

as such, the pair offered frank the tidy sum of around $50 for permission to use his likeness forever! not a few years, not a century … forever! πŸ™ƒ

and that’s how he ended up the logo! as for the name … uncle ben was actually a famous rice farmer from texas. to this day, no one is actually sure what uncle ben’s last name was and that remains the reason that he isn’t famous in his own right.

sadly, as the rice guys pretty much just used frank for his face and then dropped him 😒, there is no record of what happened to him. due to the time that this happened, black people weren’t equal citizens … hence all the awful behaviour against them 😠

so yeah, that rice that you’re eating … not the nicest brand back in the day #awks πŸ˜…

laters πŸ‘πŸ» #tdil

this one turned pretty dark, didn’t it! feel like reading something a bit nicer? just take a gander ->here<-
