today i learned – tues 23rd jan 2018

it’s been a while since we had a space fact 😏 … so, here one is!

i’ll be honest, i was struggling for a topic today πŸ˜… so this was actually inspired by πŸ‘ΈπŸΌ

#tdil that if you put saturn in a giant glass of water, it’d totes float 😏

let’s start with the awfully large elephant in the room … the fact that saturn is darn massive πŸ˜‚ like, it has a radius of 69,911km, so you’d need a gigantic glass of water πŸ™ˆ

anyway, if you did happen to have a 70,000km glass of water (because who doesn’t? πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ) then saturn would float if you plopped it on in there 😊

it’s all because saturn is made up mainly of gas and therefore it has a pretty low density πŸ‘πŸ» … in fact, saturn is sooo gassy that its density (0.687 g/cm3) is actually lower than that of water (0.998 g/cm3)

the subsequent fact is that saturn would actually go full duck and float … well, in theory at least πŸ˜… there is quite a lot of other clever science out there that determines you’d need a really deep pool of water for it to be possible πŸ™ˆ

luckily, i’m not that clever and therefore i just enjoy the fact that saturn is basically a giant space duck 😁
