today i learned – tues 26th dec 2017

i’ll be honest, figuring out what day of the week it is today, took a really long time πŸ˜‚

anyway, regardless of what day it is, it’s boxing day 😁😁😁 enter today’s fact:

#tdil why the day after christmas is called boxing day πŸ™ŒπŸ»

for the longest time, i totally thought that it was called boxing day because a big boxing match was shown on tv every boxing day πŸ™ˆ

that was when i was younger … when i got older, i guess i realised that was wrong and then decided not to investigate further πŸ˜‚ until today …

anyway on with the fact, that was a lot of backstory πŸ˜…, apparently the definitive reason for the name isn’t actually known πŸ™„ but there are a few theories πŸ™ŒπŸ»

the first theory that seems to be pretty popular came about in the victorian era. apparently the day after christmas day was when the servants got to have the day off with their families. each servant would be given a box filled with food, a bonus and gifts to take home 😁

a second popular theory is that the day after christmas was the day when the churches would open all of the money collection boxes that they had out on christmas day πŸ’° this would then be given to the poor peeps πŸ™‚

the third and final theory that i’m going to mention (there are literally loads 😳) is that christmas presents used to be called ‘christmas boxes’ … i’m not actually sure how that one relates πŸ˜‚ but it’s supposed to be the earliest known mention of boxing day πŸ‘πŸ»

to be honest, i probably should have learned this fact before actual boxing day so that you could bust out this little fact at be dinner table πŸ™ˆ soz peeps πŸ˜‚

anyway, that’s us done for today 😁 hopefully you enjoyed πŸ‘πŸ»
