today i learned – tues 7th nov 2017

i’ll be honest, i couldn’t think of a super catchy intro to this one today πŸ˜… brain be a tad frazzled πŸ₯“ #frazzlesarelife

anyway, today’s fact is a great fact about a slightly weird law that, if you ever visit singapore, might just help save you some time with the po po πŸ‘πŸ»

#tdil that it is illegal to chew chewing gum in singapore 😳

yep, you read that correctly – no chewing gum is allowed to be imported or chewed in singapore πŸ˜‚ #becausemessy

chewing gum has had a pretty rocky existence in singapore πŸ™ƒ in fact, despite the ban not being enforced until 1992, proposals to ban it go back as far as 1983!

the reason? a history of gum based vandalism and littering in singapore’s high rise buildings and on their shiny then new train system πŸš„ – the latter was actually the final straw πŸ˜….

you see, in 1987, singapore opened their super expensive ‘mass rapid transport’ railway system … pretty much straight away, vandals started sticking gum over door sensors πŸ™ˆ this prevented the doors from working correctly and caused all sorts of disruption. as you can probably imagine, catching the few peeps doing this was really difficult πŸ˜’.

the result was a total ban on chewing gum in january of 1992 by the new prime minister, goh chok tong.

to this day, it is illegal to import chewing gum into singapore (regardless of whether it’s for commercial sale or personal use) or to chew chewing gum anywhere in the country.

saying that, 2004 saw a couple of exceptions introduced πŸ‘πŸ» it is now ok to chew gum for dental or nicotine reasons … everything else is still a no.

if you do have a medicinal reason to chew gum in singapore, don’t spit it out on the streets … that’ll cost you $700. also, don’t even think about selling it πŸ™ˆ the first time fine is $100,000 or a two year prison sentence 😳

and there you go! a surprisingly long post about chewing gum in singapore πŸ˜‚ … either way, i hope you enjoyed the pub quiz fodder goodness πŸ€™πŸ»

laterz πŸ™ŒπŸ» #tdil
