ever been on holiday to another country and then had to randomly drive on the β€˜wrong’ side of the road? (wrong definitely depends where you live! πŸ™ˆ) yeah, what’s with that!? πŸ€”

it was actually my mom that raised this question … it’s a real good one 😎

#tdil the reason why different countries drive on different sides of the road πŸš—

turns out that this is yet another fact that finds its roots in people wanting to hit each other with swords πŸ˜… … swords seem to have shaped the world quite a lot πŸ€”

anyway, back in roman times, there were no formal rules on which side of the road you should ride your horse. that said, most people kept to the left … this was because they’d have their whip in their left hand and their sword in their right (their stronger hand).

keeping to the left meant that they’d always have their sword hand next to people coming the other way πŸ‘πŸ» … just in case they needed to slice some fools βš”οΈ

heading into the future (the late 1700s to be exact) things began to change in france and the states … because farming. to transport farming products, farmers started to use huge wagons that were pulled by a load of horses.

instead of a driver’s seat, the driver would sit on the left rear horse … allowing them to keep their right hand free to whip horses 🐴. in order to allow the driver a better view of oncoming wagon wheels (not the choccy and marshmallow discs) they liked traffic to pass on the left.

in order to achieve this unhindered view and ensure no crashes, wagon drivers liked to keep to the right πŸ‘πŸ» #thedividebegins.

now, at that point, there was still no formal rule as to which side of the road you should keep to … due to a lack of traffic. however, as roads started getting busier, some sort of rules were needed to make sure that there was a form of conformity and sense 🧐

these days, about 75% of the world drives on the right πŸ™ƒ … us brits and nearly all of the countries that were part of the commonwealth are the only ones still on the left (partially due to stubbornness πŸ˜‚ and partially because we designed out towns and cities around driving on the left)

the rest of the world settled for the right due to a few different influences πŸ€“. besides the aforementioned farming stuff, one of the largest influences was henry ford and his model t. henry decided that the driver should sit on the left, so that front and rear seat passengers could exit the car onto the kerb πŸš™

so yeah, this post is getting long now 😭 but basically, there’s a whole load of reasons why we all drive on different sides of the road πŸ€™πŸ». if you want the really long answer … you’ll find one of my sources ->here<-

anyway, i’m gonna stop waffling now! go enjoy your day … regardless of which side of the road it is on!

muchos love πŸ‘€ #tdil
