a long time ago, when i was but a small lad, my graphic design teacher told me that she was the one who designed both the lucozade man and the nike swoosh …
obvs, she didn’t … the people designing logos like that earned multi-millions from their designs … didn’t they? 😳 apparently, swoosh lady didn’t!
#tdil the designer of the nike swoosh logo was paid the grand sum of just $35! 💰
how nuts is that?! any form of branding for huge companies such as apple, nike or british airways, usually costs millions … like, there’s a dude out there who used to charge over $100,000 just to write the text for a single advert! 😱
despite that fact, the iconic nike swoosh was an absolute steal 💁🏻♀️ … here’s how it happened!
so, the swoosh was created in 1971 by a lady named carolyn davidson – at the time she was a graphic design student at portland state university.
the swoosh came around through a previous connection that she had made with a dude named phil knight in 1969. you see, at the time, phil was assistant professor at her university. knowing that carolyn needed extra money to fund her oil painting classes, he had asked her to help him with some projects at a rate of $2 per hour.
one day, phil had the bright idea that he wanted to start his own athletic trainer company – nike. of course, after having his moment of genius, he went straight to carolyn and asked her to create him a stripe or image that could be used on the side of the shoe. hey presto, the nike swoosh is born! ✔️
it’s at this point that we reach the moment when it costs just $35 🙈 … there’s no scandal or rip off here however! carolyn simply charged phil based on the hours worked and the rate that they’d agreed 😅 (which is pretty mental when you think of how big that logo was about to become 🙃)
anyway, without going into the whole history of nike, we all know that they became athletic trainer giants 👍🏻 and life was great for phil … but what about poor student carolyn? 😢
well, don’t feel too sorry for her – she got a designer job with nike for four years and was eventually awarded over $1,000,000 worth of nike shares, a diamond ring and a gold ring 💎. she also graduated university as the lady that had created the nike swoosh, which of course meant she never struggled to find work during her 30 years as a freelance designer 😏
and there you have it 😬 the way to get a super cheap logo for your future business giant is to outsource to a cash strapped student 😂
i wonder how much that logo is worth now? 🤔
byyeeeee! 😜 #tdil
for three days in a row, we’ve had actually interesting posts?! what is happening to this blog!? anyway, if you want to read those posts for yourself, just go ->here<-
(due to massive copyright laws and me not wanting to pay phil and carolyn $20,000,000,000, i had to settle for an image of some dirty old nike trainers 😒 license is ->here<-)
