today i learned – weds 30th aug 2017

right, last night, something amazing happened for us brits – the great british bake off started again ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

if you donโ€™t know what that is … itโ€™s basically a telly program that is more a british treasure than the crown jewels! #queeniewouldagree. as such, todayโ€™s fact had to be about cake!

#tdil the actual difference between biscuits and cakes ๐Ÿ˜ this might be the most important thing weโ€™ve ever had on this blog ๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿช.

itโ€™s an age old debate – what constitutes a biscuit and what constitutes a cake? ๐Ÿค” not only has this debate plagued families across the world however … it has caused no end of headache for the taxman ๐Ÿ˜…

โ€˜but why is that even important to the taxman, he just likes taking money?โ€™ i hear you cry. well, whilst you may think thereโ€™s no difference between cakes and biscuits … ec legislation (european commission) says that cakes are zero-rated for vat whilst chocolate covered biscuits arenโ€™t ๐Ÿ™ˆ #awks.

that, of course, means that they needed to find a discernible difference between the two. the difference that they decided on was that cakes go hard when stale and biscuits go soft ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป.

by โ€˜theyโ€™, i actually mean mcvities ๐Ÿ˜… they ended up having to prove to the scary tax people that their jaffa cakes were indeed cakes and not biscuits (basically, they wanted to avoid paying tax ๐Ÿ˜‚).

and there you have it; one of lifeโ€™s great mysteries answered ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป … sometimes i feel like this blog is a public service ๐Ÿ˜.

right, until tomorrow ๐Ÿ™‚

much love ๐Ÿ˜ #tdil
