today i learned – tues 1st aug 2017

right, i’m going to get straight into it … the apocalypse is coming and it’s all facebook’s fault 😭 i know that we’ve had lots of possible apocalypses on this blog … but this one is legit 🤙🏻

(also, on a brighter facebook note, the blog now has a facebook page! you should go ->here<- and follow it so you’re always up-to-date! 😬)

#tdil that facebook shut down two robots earlier today because they taught themselves a new language that only they understood 🤖☠️

how damn terrifying is that?! it’s 100% the plot of a sci-fi film 😳 have you not seen that film where johnny depp uploads his consciousness to the internet and basically takes over the world?! (ish) 😭

anyway, wondering what actually happened? basically, facebook was testing if two artificial intelligence chat robots could barter with one another when they started chatting to each other in a new modified english that they had invented themselves 👍🏻

the test saw facey-b give the two chat bots a selection of items that had a certain value attached to them – hats, balls, books … standard car boot sale gubbins. they then challenged the two bots to negotiate with each other and trade items (because all horror films start with a mundane task).

at first, the bots were pretty chill with their new task in life 👍🏻 and they got right to it … however, the two chat bots were programmed to continuously learn throughout the negotiations – they also weren’t told that they had to negotiate in proper english 🤓

the result? the chat bots created themselves a modified version of english that made it quicker and easier for them to negotiate with each other 😶 … basically, they simultaneously learned a new language that only they understood.

now, if you’re currently wondering what a robot super english sounds like … it’s this:

“Bob: i can i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to

Bob: you i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have a ball to me to me to me to me to me to me to me

Bob: i i can i i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have a ball to me to me to me to me to me to me to me

Bob: i . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to

Bob: you i i i i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have 0 to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to

Bob: you i i i everything else . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Alice: balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to”

ok, i’ll admit that it doesn’t make much sense (hence the reason why the ‘minders’ didn’t understand what on earth the bots were going on about. bob and alice, however, actually completed a number of trades through the use of that new language 👍🏻

you know what else is scary about this pair of always learning chat bots? in a super short amount of time, they taught themselves humanlike sales techniques 🙃 … things like pretending that they really liked a particular item so that they could later make out that giving it away was a gigantic huge sacrifice. they’re basically mad clever 😳

facebook say that they shut down the two bots because “they were interested in having bots that could talk to people” and not because they were mildly terrified about the hell that they’d created.

basically, if the mad real life zombies (->here<-) or the hole in the sun (->here<-) don’t get us … the robot apocalypse will 👍🏻

and with that in mind, i’m going to get some human sleep whilst i still can 🤖 … the end is neigh people!

sleep tight 😴 #tdil

pretty cheery that post 😂 fancy reading something less interesting but somewhat happier? you just need to go ->here<-

(today’s picture is of asimo … a robot that has basically been forced to do leg day for its entire existence 💪 … if any robot is going to get us, it’s totally going to be him 🙃. image license ->here<-)
