today i learned – tues 18th july 2017

today’s random little learning actually came about yesterday whilst waiting to be served at an audi parts store …

despite that, it has absolutely nothing to do with audi … or even cars at all 🚗, for that matter. i’ve no idea how it came about but somehow we’re today jumping back into the worlds of phrase origin and superstition 💀

#tdil how the phrase ‘touch wood’ or ‘knock on wood’ came about 🤔 (yes, this does still count as a tdil … only the question came about yesterday, the learning happened right now!)

so yeah, i’m not superstitious is any way, shape or form but i find myself using those two phrases quite a lot … even so, i’ve never had any idea where it came from. this is about to change!

well, kind of … as per usual with these things, there is no single explanation as to where the saying came from. instead, there are multiple explanations 😒 why didn’t people just keep it in a book?! they loved writing stuff down in olden times 📖.

the first explanation that people have is one of pagan origin. pagans used to believe (they probably still do! don’t know why i went for ‘used to’) that trees were home to fairies, spirits and other mythical creatures 🍄.

in order to request good luck or to distract spirits with evil intentions, pagans would knock or touch on wood 🌳. if they were after good luck, they’d actually knock a few times – once when they politely mentioned the request and a second time to say thank you. it was thought that the knocking would prevent evil spirits from hearing you and intervening 👹.

some other traditions say that knocking on wood would awaken and release benevolent wood fairies that lived there.

the saying could also be of christian origin – it’s all to do with the cross. you see, some christians believe that by touching wood you are touching the wood of the cross and therefore asking for the protection of god 🌩.

some people also believe that by carrying around/wearing some kind of wooden artefact or the cross itself, you would have good luck 👍🏻 #ideal

this is another one of those today i learned posts that feels a little unfulfilling 🙃 leaves you wanting more like when someone eats half of your angel delight 😭

either way, there isn’t much else that i can tell you about it! isn’t my fault that they don’t know the reason behind it! 💁🏼 but yeah, at least you now know the two most likely origins 🙂

they’ll at least be good to use at the next pub quiz or family get together 🤙🏻

anyway, enough rambling!

tatty bye yo 😎 #tdil

back to actual useful posts today! 😬 if you feel like reading some more, you just need to go ->here<- (don’t read yesterday’s … it wasn’t great 😂)

(today picture was taken by me 👍🏻 so, for once, no one can sue me 🙌🏻🙌🏻 #touchwood)
