it gives me great pleasure to say that today’s fact is going to be about one of my favourite tv shows ever 🙌🏻 and was actually inspired by the fact that i’m currently watching bottom 😂.
today is all about proper, classic, british comedy from the 80s 😏 how damn glorious is that?!
#tdil the reason why they had to include a live band in every episode of the young ones 😎 (i really wish there was a vyvyan related emoji 😭).
so, for those who haven’t discovered the wonder that is the young ones, it’s a tv show from the 80s which focused on a house of 4 students – rick ‘the people’s poet’ (rik mayall), vyvyan the punk (ade edmondson), neil the hippy (nigel planer) and mike ‘the ladies man’ (christopher ryan).
as you can imagine, this is far from a normal household … there’s lots of carnage, anarchy and physical humour. despite the fact that the writing team had never written for telly and just decided to write random jokes they found funny … it’s ruddy awesome and you need it in your life!
anyway, at some point in every episode, a live band would strike up and play their latest big hit – to name but a few, madness appeared twice, nine below zero appeared once … even motörhead had a slot! it is this that today’s fact is about!
turns out, that the bbc had to include live music in every episode in order for them to class it as ‘light entertainment’ instead of ‘situation comedy’. wondering why this is significant? well, if they categorised it as situation comedy, they couldn’t give it any budget as all the sit com money was apparently spoken for!
totally not a bad thing 😏 thanks to that show (which my dad introduced me to 🙌🏻) my eyes have been opened to the rather brilliant music that ultimately led to the modern ska and punk that i enjoy these days 🎧.
how’s that for interesting? 😬 (providing you like the young ones 😂 … if you’ve never watched that, then i doubt you found it fun 🙈). if you’ve never enjoyed the young ones, then i highly recommend that you get on it 👍🏻 netflix will sort you right out (i think).
au revoir y’all! 🙃 #tdil

(i’ll be honest, i don’t think i’m allowed to use that image 😳 and i don’t even 0.01% own the rights to it. it’s from the bbc website 🙃 go forth and buy episodes from them to stop me getting sued –>here<–)
